I lingered before these fossils, filled with a sensation difficult to describe. One of the halls in the museum had attracted a crowd of locals. It featured a display of human organs and corpses. In the midst of the crowded hall were displays containing conjoined twins, and mummies dried in a standing position, amid assorted organs and brains. In the center of the hall was a woman’s body floating in formaldehyde like a giant fish. Her skin was pale white tinged with yellow and she was wearing black N Town 29 silk gloves and long silk stockings.

From among every possible path, humans have chosen the longest and most remote path leading to the self. An artist comes to understand himself or herself through making choices. These choices are related to one’s spiritual predicament, concerned with returning to the self, and the pursuit of spiritual values. These are philosophical choices. These are important questions, but rarely do designers ask questions at this level. They think, “I need to decorate this wall,” or “This square stool should be round”—but what are they ornamenting? Our considerations tend to stop at a certain level, on a level that provides a sense of security. How many people willingly locate themselves in a state of insecurity? No cup can compare to drinking water from your own two hands, and it’s been a long time since we took a drink of water without having to twist off a cap—but wasn’t it wisdom that begat these circumstances?
