At its simplest a calorimeter consists of an absorbing material which is heated by the laser beam. The temperature change in the absorber is monitored by a suitable temperature sensor such as a thermocouple or thermistor. The ideal calorimeter comprises the absorbing medium, which may be an optical glass filter or a graphite coating on a metal substrate, in good thermal contact with a heatsink. Taking this simple model, it is possible to investigate the dependence of the calorimeter sensitivity on detector parameters such as heat capacities and thermal conductivities by assuming that the radiation absorbed by the element raises its temperature, in turn leading to heat transfer to the sink.
