Alemanno and E. 1 The Supraclavicular Region The supraclavicular region has a triangular shape, and for this reason, it is also called the supraclavicular triangle, bounded by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the trapezius muscle and anteriorly by the clavicle. The latter is a long, relatively flattened bone, that connects the scapula via the acromial process to the manubrium sterni. It presents a double curvature, one curve medial and anteriorly convex, and the other lateral and posteriorly convex which gives it the appearance of a capital S on its side, or a kind of ‘chicane’, whose point of transition from one curve to the other corresponds approximately to its midpoint.

This explains the onset of Claude Bernard-Horner syndrome in cases of blockade of the sympathetic component. In this syndrome, palpebral ptosis is due to plegia of the tenuous smooth muscle fibres of the tarsus palpebrae, which leads to a reduction in the palpebral rim; miosis is due to plegia of the ciliary muscle, and enophthalmos is due to plegia of the tenuous smooth muscle fibres of Tenon’s capsule which, inserting on the circumference of the eyeball and wrapping themselves around it, no longer maintain ocular tension.

A second efferent group forms the so-called vertebral nerve or, better, vertebral plexus, following the artery of the same name and insinuating itself with its branches in the foramina of the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae. A third group, with an inferomedial course, forms the inferior cardiac nerve (cardioaccelerator) after connecting via an anastomosis to the middle cardiac nerve. This should come as no surprise because in the embryo, the heart is originally located in the cervical region and only later migrates into the thorax followed by its own innervation.
