Early Catholic Biblical Translation Activities It would take nearly three centuries before another Christian mission reached China and resumed the activities of Bible translation into the languages of China. In the late thirteenth century, Giovanni da Montecorvino (1247–1328) founded the first Catholic mission to China in Cambaluc (Peking), and allegedly had translated the New Testament and Psalms from the Vulgate and Greek editions into Mongolian, the official language of the Yuan Dynasty (1260–1368).
